Once again, as I work through the second half of my cancer treatment, life is never certain. My Mom passed on June 27.

It has taken me a while to write this post, and I am tearing up as I do this. Below you will find a part of the draft obituary, which will be easier for me than trying to write something while sobbing, and easier for you, as this will actually be comprehensible as compared to what I might write.

During the week prior to her passing, Mom’s health and desire to remain with us waned. Dawn, John, and I, along with our significant others, all stood vigil as Mom transitioned into hospice, and then into God’s arms. I am very thankful that we were all there to support Mom and each other through the end.

Janece Marie Smith, a loving wife (widowed in 2005), mother, and grandmother passed away following a long struggle with declining health. She returned to God’s loving arms on June 27, 2018, at the age of 76.

Janece was born in Hemet, California, January 27, 1942, to George and Cora Henson. She attended school in Hemet to the age of 16, when she dropped out of high school, later finishing in 1974.

She married Albert Smith in Carson City, Nevada. During her life she worked at various businesses, always being responsible for payables.

She deeply loved her three children and considered her six grandchildren to be her “greatest” gift! She lovingly enjoyed watching her small family grow into a large one, embracing over ten more step-grandchildren, and 20-plus step-great-grandchildren.

Janece enjoyed reading, making Afghans for her loved ones, cross-stitch, and scrapbooking with her daughter. She loved attending card club and laughing with her friends.

Being cared for by her daughter during her final years makes missing her especially hard! Life will not be the same without her; she will be missed dearly by all who loved her!

Janece is survived by her children, Dwayne (Julie) Summerfield of Eugene, Oregon, Dawn (Jeff) Williams of Rupert, Idaho, and John Smith of Des Moines, Washington; step-daughter, Linda Brazzel; step-sons, Travis and Casey Smith; sister, Beulah Sheld of Alturas, California; and her grandchildren, Jamie, Patrick, Louis, Ryan, Quinn, and Blake.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Albert Smith; parents, George and Cora Henson; sister, Myrtle Tye; brother, Jack Henson; step-son, Dale McKenna; and step-daughter, Denice.

We love you, Mom!
